Symbols of Christmas Freebie

Updated: Feb 24

The Symbols of Christmas have been a part of our family holiday traditions since my kiddos were little. In fact, it was in doing this program together one Christmas Eve, that we discovered that our daugher could sing, and sing well. She has gone on to sing in dozens of musicals and choir performance and every time I here "Angels We Have Heard on High" - I see her eight year old self singing in front of our Christmas tree.

On Christmas Eve, every year, we go through our box of Christmas Symbols. We learn about the history of each, read scripture verses and sing a Christmas hymn. We follow this with a short video, The Very First Noel, which was given to us years ago. (it's also on youtube) It all helps us prepare for Christmas morning with the Savior on our mind.

I decided to have our church girls make their own set. These were all simple ways to make each item and they were done in an hour. We even had time at the end to read each of the history parts for each symbol.

You can gather your own symbols and put them in a gift bag. I've even given this as gifts. But to make it an activity for youth, I came up with these easy crafts. Here's some items you might need.

Wreath:

  • Jar Rings - I found some around my house

  • pop poms - this bag had the sizes for the wreaths and the holly

  • Little Bows

  • Pipe Cleaners our local stores didn't have any. This was plenty for the wreaths and candy canes

  • Scissors and glue

Angel:

  • White cardstock & Scissors- simply print the angels out (girls needed help tucking the two slits together)

Bells:

  • Gold plastic cup - 12 oz is the preferred size, but we use large cups too and they worked great.

  • Bells, tape, scissors and ribbon. I was lucky enough to find bells at the Dollar Tree, the last bag.

  • Use a pen or screwdriver to poke a hole in the top of the cup.

Star:

  • Star Ornaments - You could easily find a craft for this, but I already had these.

Candy Cane:

  • Red & White beads - I got mine at walmart.

  • Pipe Cleaners. Put a white bead in the center of the pipe cleaner and then fold the pipe cleaner in half for the rest of the beads go over 2 pieces of wire (otherwise it's too fimsy). After putting the center bead on, the girls needed 11 of each color.

Holly:

  • Green cardstock - simply print the holly out

  • pop poms - this bag had the sizes for the wreaths and the holly

  • Scissors & glue

Candle:

  • Scrapbook paper, scissors and tape for the paper candle
